Marathon Travel Guide
Welcome to Marathon!
Surrounded by lush boreal forest, Marathon is a small town in Ontario, situated on the north shore of Lake Superior, midway between Sault Ste. Marie and Thunder Bay. Marathon was originally a railroad community named Peninsula in the late 1800s. In the mid-1900s a pulp mill was built and the town name changed to Everest, which was the name of the president of the pulp mill. Shortly after, the town name was changed again to its current name, Marathon in honour of the pulp mill company name at the time, Marathon Corporation of Wisconsin. The town's population grew steadily during these times especially in the early 1980s when gold was discovered about 40 km (25 mi) east of Marathon in Hemlo, Ontario. Many employed in the gold mines made Marathon their home. Today, the town is a popular tourist hub with the local area offering plenty to see and do. There are numerous places to visit to enjoy a variety of recreational activities at parks such as Penn Lake Park. There is also the Marathon District Museum offering visitors an educational glimpse into the town's past, while outdoor enthusiasts may enjoy skiing in the area or playing a round of golf.Tourist Attractions
